The Joe and Van Mabee Animal Rescue Center
For as long as there are homeless cats and dogs in Midland, we will be working to rescue them and find them homes. We're here to create a new path for pets.
Through the support of the Midland community, we are pleased to be able to expand our rescue operations with the opening of our new facility - The Joe and Van Mabee Animal Rescue Center (The Mabee ARC).
The Mabee ARC will be operated by Midland Humane Coalition as an auxiliary facility to its PetSmart Enhanced Adoption Center (EAC). It will provide the much-needed space to prepare rescues for adoption.
Moving to this bigger space will allow us to make a bigger impact and save more lives.

FAQs
I am looking for a new pet. Can I visit The Mabee ARC to check out adoptable animals?
All Adoptables pets will be available for viewing at our Enhanced Adoption Center (EAC) inside the Midland PetSmart. You may check out available pets online too: www.midlandhumane.org/adoptables
The Mabee ARC will house animals waiting for transport or who are taking a break from the Adoption Center on one side and animals awaiting vetting like a neuter or spay on the other side of the building.

Is the Adoption Center inside PetSmart still open? Why do you have 2 locations?
Yes, The Enhanced Adoption Center (EAC) will remain open to the public. This is our storefront where people can view and meet animals. The EAC is a small facility with very limited space.
The Mabee ARC will function as an auxiliary facility where we will do most of the prep work to get pets ready to move into the EAC. This is a temporary foster facility for rescues.
Having two locations enables us to have a more streamlined intake and vetting process. It helps us operate smoothly and take on more initiatives to save more animals — like transporting pets out of the area.

Why do some pets have to stay at The Mabee ARC before being placed for adoption?
All animals that enter our Enhanced Adoption Center (EAC) must be 100% ready for adoption. This means they must be altered, vaccinated and free from any contagious illness and parasites prior to moving in to a kennel.
Many animals rescued off the streets and the shelter have no prior records available and need to be vetted and isolated until they are cleared.
Some pets might have to wait at The Mabee ARC until they are altered or receive any vetting that might be lacking.

Please make an attempt to find owners. We can provide you with online lost and found communities to help. Here are a few tips on assisting Lost & Found Pets

I found an injured cat/dog. Can I bring it to The Mabee ARC?
No - while The Mabee ARC is a safe haven for animals, we do not have a Veterinarian on site. We do not have the resources to treat injured animals.
Please seek medical help from a veterinarian. Local emergency clinics can also check an animal for a microchip. Check here for a list of veterinary clinics in Midland.

Can you come and pick up stray animals in my neighborhood?
MHC does not have the resources to pick up animals.
Midland Animal Services has the resources to pick up stray animals. We try to pull as many animals as we can from the City shelter to help the overwhelming amount of strays that come in. Check out the MAS website.

A pet is being neglected/treated badly. Will you come and rescue them?
Unfortunately, a no-kill animal rescue does not have the authority to take someone’s pets from them or file reports. Midland Animal Services should be called in this case. Check out the MAS website.
Now that you have purchased a new building, WILL you still need donations?
Midland Humane Coalition (MHC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is funded by donations from the community.
We will always require financial support from the community to be able to continue our rescue operations so we can get homeless pets adopted or transported up north. Donations pay for staff & resources to care for animals.
